Tips for writing Wedding Vows that truly speak from the Heart

Your wedding vows are the heart of your ceremony — the moment where you pause, take a deep breath, look into each other’s eyes, and promise to share your lives together. It’s intimate, it is emotional, and it is deeply personal. But when it comes to writing those vows, many people feel a little overwhelmed. It is often hard to know where to start? How do you put ALL that emotion into words?

As a celebrant, I love to help couples craft vows that feel authentic to them  as well as being meaningful. Here are my top tips to make the process easier and more enjoyable.

1. Start With Your Story

Your vows should reflect your journey as a couple. Think about the moments that brought you here—the first time you met, the adventures you’ve shared, the challenges you’ve overcome. These memories are the foundation of your promises to each other.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I love most about my partner?
  • How has our relationship changed me?
  • What are the moments that define “us”?

Start to jot down these thoughts without worrying about structure. This is often the toughest part as you gather your raw material— but this will form the heart of your vows.

2. Focus on What Matters Most

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to sound poetic or perfect, but the most powerful vows are honest and heartfelt. Instead of aiming for grand statements, perfect grammar or eloquent words, focus on what truly matters to you.

Consider:

  • What do you want to promise for the future?
  • What values will guide your marriage?
  • How do you want your partner to FEEL when they hear your words?

A few sincere sentences can be more moving than a page of flowery language.

3. Find Your Voice

Your vows should sound like you—not like a script from a movie or a Pinterest quote. If you’re naturally funny, use your humour and ass a lighthearted touch. If you’re sentimental, lean into that. Authenticity is what makes vows memorable.

Tip: Read your draft out loud. Does it sound like something you’d say in conversation? If not, simplify it until it feels natural to you.

4. Include Promises That Feel Real

Vows are about commitment, so include promises that reflect your relationship. These can be serious or playful—whatever feels right for you.

Examples:

  • “I promise to support your dreams and cheer you on every step of the way.”
  • “I promise to always share the last slice of pizza.”
  • “I promise to love you through every season of life.”

Mixing heartfelt and lighthearted promises can make your vows feel more personal.

5. Keep It Manageable

When emotions run high, long vows can feel overwhelming. Aim for about one to two minutes when spoken aloud. That’s roughly 150–250 words. It is long enough to say something meaningful without losing the moment.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Borrow Inspiration

If you’re stuck, look at poems, song lyrics, or quotes that resonate with you. You don’t need to copy them—just use them as a springboard for your own words. Sometimes a single line can spark an idea that feels completely yours.

7. Practice, But Don’t Memorize

Reading your vows aloud a few times will help you feel confident, but don’t worry about memorising them. It will also let you know of there are any sentences you will trip over on the day.  I will do this for your ceremony script.

On the day, you’ll have them written down, and that’s perfectly okay. The emotion in your voice will matter far more than perfect delivery and nobody will expect you to deliver a monologue.

8. Trust Your Heart

The MOST important tip? Speak from the heart. All those secret thoughts you have when you look at your partner and cannot believe how lucky you are to have found them.  Use them both for inspiration and for confidence.  Your partner isn’t expecting perfection—they’re expecting honesty, love, and a little bit of you. If your words come from a genuine place, they will be beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Writing your vows is a chance to pause and reflect on what this love means to you. It’s not about impressing anybody —it’s about expressing love in your own way.

So take a deep breath, trust yourself, and let your heart lead the way.
