A Day Wrapped in Love: Celebrating My Oldest Friend’s Wedding

There are some days that feel like they’re stitched together with pure magic — my oldest friend’s wedding was one of them. From the sleepover we shared the night before her wedding, to waking in her home with her daughter the following day and playing with her at the local park followed by a gorgeous family lunch every single detail felt like a page from a love story we’d all been waiting to read.

Driving her to the ceremony, I couldn’t help but feel a rush of emotions. I’ve known her since we were eight.  We have been through so much together.  How we became friends we are never quite sure as we are as chalk and cheese as there can be, however I think in our hearts we know we were both old souls in young bodies and we instantly sensed that actually we were, and still are incredibly similar.

We grew up together stumbling along the way and slowly finding our places in the world.  We shared those awkward teenage years where we confessed our dreams in random heart-to-heart.  We grieved over the loss of loved ones, the awful heartbreaks of being dumped and the tragedy of friendships breaking down.

And in amongst all of that, though our lives took very different paths when I left school and started full time work whilst she went to Uni, went travelling and enjoyed so many new experiences we somehow stayed loyal to each other and kept in touch, meeting when we could for days of filled with laughter…. and of course, countless brews.

And then she met Mr Right.  And he was nothing like I expected him to be.  He was solid, reliable and kind.  He was exactly who she deserved, and I knew he would take good care of her and together they would build a beautiful life.

And they really did make the most beautiful life together, and when I met them for a day out or for dinner or went to a party at their home, I left feeling warm and surrounded by joy.  This only grew when they were blessed with the birth of their gorgeous daughter – a true blessing to all our lives.

I was overjoyed when Mr. Right proposed, and they started planning their dream day.  I was even more thrilled when I was asked to be part of their chosen wedding part.  I loved being part of the planning and it was an honour to be there as she chose her wedding dress.

Sadly, their dream day was booked for 2020 and many diverts and compromises were made before they decided enough was enough and regardless of rules, regulations or restrictions they may have to adhere to, the time had come for them to be married.

Seeing her standing under the gazebo in the glorious July sun, eyes locked on her partner, it was like watching a dream take shape in real life.

The vows were heartfelt and unshakably genuine — not just promises, but reflections of a journey they’ve already walked together – the laughter, the challenges, and the unwavering support that defines a strong relationship. And even the most stoic guests found themselves smiling through misty eyes.

The reception was a joyful blur of passing clinking glasses, a cosy meal shared among the six to a table and a terrace full of laughter and joy. This wedding was proof that even in challenging times, joy can bloom.

The speeches were a highlight—funny, emotional, and full of love. Each word spoke volumes about the couple’s character and the bond they share with their friends and family.

As I watched them share their first dance, alone under rule of 6, I realised weddings aren’t just about two people saying “I do”—they’re about the bonds that connect us all.  They’re about the community that surrounds them, the shared history, and the hope for a future built on love, patience, and laughter.

And after their dance solo, we shared a night of laughter, music, and unforgettable memories.  And despite everything, their friends and family came together like pieces of a puzzle, each adding their own spark to the celebration.

As I left that evening, my heart was full. I felt grateful to have shared in such a beautiful chapter of their story.

To my dear friend — thank you for letting me be part of this chapter of your story. Your marriage is, to me, as beautiful as the day you said your vows, and I hope that the years ahead be filled with the same joy that lit up the room that night.
