A 2 by 2 Wedding in London: Intimate Elegance in the Heart of the City

When it comes to weddings, bigger isn’t always better. Sometimes, the most beautiful love stories are told in whispers, not in crowds.

This year I learnt that a 2 by 2 wedding is simply perfect for couples who value intimacy, simplicity, and meaningful moments. A 2 by 2 wedding—just the couple and two witnesses—offers a beautifully understated alternative to traditional celebrations. And when this tender moment unfolds in London, a city where history and romance intertwine, it becomes unforgettable.

A 2 by 2 wedding isn’t about grandeur; it is about connection. It is a ceremony that feels deeply personal, a day focused on love, a timeless memory without the weight of tradition.

I know now that many 2 by 2 weddings throughout history have taken place at The Old Marylebone Town Hall. And what a venue it is! Nestled on the bustling Marylebone Road, The Old Marylebone Town Hall is more than just a registry office—it’s a London landmark steeped in history and elegance. For over a century, this Grade II listed building has been the setting for thousands of love stories, from intimate elopements to star-studded ceremonies.

I still cannot believe that I was lucky enough to be a witness to one of my very dearest friends earlier this year at their 2 by 2 wedding and stepped into a role that was both practical and deeply meaningful.

So what did it mean to be a witness?

Legally, my presence ensured marriage would be valid. I observed the ceremony, witnessing the exchange of vows and signatures. And I signed the register, my signature confirming the couple’s union. But beyond the legalities, being a witness was about sharing a sacred moment.

And unlike large weddings where guests can blur into the crowd, I was one of only two people standing beside the couple as they promised their forever to each other. I was not just a spectator, I was a guardian of their story, someone they trusted and valued enough to hold space for their love. It was such an honour to be asked and I treasure being part of their memory of that day. A memory that will last a lifetime.

Being part of a 2 by 2 wedding in London was for me proof that romance thrives in simplicity. In a city that whispers stories of love through its cobblestone streets and timeless architecture, their intimate ceremony became another chapter in its London’s tale but the beginning of their tale as husband and wife.

They stepped out of the registry office, the city humming softly around us, their fingers intertwined, all of our hearts full. No crowd, no chaos—just the happy couple, their love, and the promise of forever.

If you are planning a 2 by 2 Wedding, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Choose Your Venue: From Chelsea Old Town Hall to Islington, London’s registry offices are steeped in charm. (Availability can vary, so book early.)
  2. Legal Requirements: You’ll need to give notice at your local register office at least 29 days before the ceremony.
  3. Choose Your Witnesses: They can be friends, family, or even staff at the venue if needed.
  4. Add Personal Touches: Even a small wedding can feel special—consider flowers, a photographer, or a celebratory toast.

Making It Memorable

A 2 by 2 wedding doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Here are some ideas:

  • Hire a Photographer: Capture candid moments around London’s landmarks.
  • Dress Your Best: Whether it’s a chic suit or a simple gown, make it feel like your day.
  • Add a Touch of Magic: A bouquet of fresh blooms, a photographer to capture stolen glances, a handwritten vow.
  • Celebrate in Style: Whether it’s a cozy afternoon tea or a Michelin-starred dinner, let the day reflect your love. Or stay at a boutique hotel and explore the city as newlyweds.

Why Choose London?

London offers an incredible backdrop for an intimate wedding:

  • Historic Venues: From iconic registry offices like Marylebone Town Hall to charming borough offices, you’ll find spaces steeped in history.
  • Picturesque Spots: After the ceremony, stroll through Hyde Park, pose by Tower Bridge, or enjoy a quiet moment along the Thames.
  • World-Class Dining: Celebrate with a romantic meal at one of London’s Michelin-starred restaurants or cozy gastropubs.
